Welcome to Platypus House and a World of Monotreme Magic!

Nestled on the water in the beautiful Tamar Valley, Platypus House offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch live Tasmanian Platypuses and Echidnas in daylight conditions and undercover! Wet and cold days are not a problem!

Tasmanian Platypuses and Echidnas are unique and simply amazing. Both are must-see animals that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Join us on an unforgettable fun and educational tour suitable for all ages and watch them actively feeding and playing as you wander through the platypus ponds and echidna garden.

Platypus House was established to advance public awareness and understanding about the magic of the monotremes. It is an ideal educational visit for school, family and community group visits.

Enjoy a great coffee from our takeaway café overlooking the Tamar River or have fun browsing for a gift for someone special.

Photography is most welcome.

Voted! Loved Platypus House when we were there in 2023, came for the platypus and fell in love with the Echidnas! ❤️❤️❤️ Would love any chance to get back to Tassie!

We were really disappointed we arrived just at the wrong time for the tour that was already going around and I wish we had gone on our first day of our holiday not the last so that we could visit the next day. We spent far longer enjoying Seahorse World next door than we’d expected. It was so fascinating and we hadn’t realised they had so many other species to look at up close, watch their behaviour and have questions answered so well. They were brilliant explaining and generously sharing their knowledge. We loved the tiny little Red Hand Fish, they were a huge unexpected bonus. And we’ll definitely be back to see the platypus, just remember to check tour times before we go. Oh and I suggest everyone visits the local chocolate factory for their waffles for breakfast, piled with strawberries, banana, bacon and maple syrup they were utterly delicious and I think I ate way too much and rolled out of there into the actual chocolate shop part where we chose from the most delicate beautiful flavoured single chocolate range. Of course after the waffles the chocolates were going to have to wait for a treat that night but stupidly we forgot all about them while in Seahorse World for so much longer than we expected and what can you do but laugh…or cry when you get back into the car and find that even in the esky my bag of individual chocolate delights was now a bag of liquid chocolate! But straight into the fridge at the hotel and it was still delicious, just a real mix of mystery yummy flavours. I absolutely loved that holiday exploring the top of Tas. And will allow more time next time to see the platypus too
